Drivers' Corner - Caring in Action

Family Values
Have you noticed that "family values" are getting a lot of press
lately? Same sex marriages, Don't Ask Don't Tell issues with the
military, and civil unions all bring to light how family values
affect our society which in turn affects our industry.
There exists probably no greater need to address "family values" than
in transportation. It is difficult to have a proper relationship with
your wife or to help with the children. To meet normal family
responsibilities while you are a 1000 miles away becomes a challenge
for the average driver.
A driver from Warrenton, MO was headed to Portland, OR when his
company received word that his wife had passed away. She had died of
a heart attack. She was not aware of any medical issues.
His company put a notice on computer to have him call the office when
he stopped for fuel and then alerted us to meet with the him. We
helped get him to the airport and back to his family.
"Family values" are often misread when it comes to the professional
driver.
1. The very reason most drivers are on the road is that they care
about their families and want to provide for them.. Shelter, clothes,
food, and education for the children are goals sought by the
professional drivers of America.
2. Drivers maintain daily contact with your families through cell
phones and the internet. Using services such as Skype, you can
actually be face to face with your family. That daily contact needs
to be a staple in your activity the same as eating.
3. More importantly, every day, tell your family you love them. We
do not know what the future holds for any of us and our families need
to know we care. What greater "family value" can one instill than to
love and to care for each other.
Bottom Line: Trust the family values you learned growing up. That is
where your convictions will be.
