Q I have had a CDL permit for one year with my state. I''m going to a trucking school. Do I still need to get a CDL permit from them (the trucking school)?

A

Yes you do. You will also have to get a license in the state you are taking your CDL test in at the end of your training and then have to switch it back over to your home state when you go back home. It is a gigantic vicious money-sucking circle but that''s the regulations.

Q I am learning to get my class A CDL. Back in my younger years, I had a problem with alcohol. By 1983, I had racked up three DUIs. I have not had a drink since then. My driving record since is near spotless. I was told, by my placement advisor that I may have a problem finding a position OTR. How much of a problem do you think I may have finding a job?

A

You have a difficult path. You should have applied with companies before you even began training and got a pre-hire letter at the very least. Did the school know about your DUIs before they enrolled you? Chances are they knew and they did not warn you or advise you to make sure you were hirable before taking your money. Now I am not saying your CDL is useless, just that it will be hard to find a job. Go to Layover.com''s online application. Fill it out. Your one application will be seen by many companies. You will get some feedback from it I am sure. You will also want to start calling around and looking for a job, even if you are still in training. Make that school can help you.

Q If you do not put a company down that you use to work for on an application, will that company come up on your DAC report?

A

Yes. It is federal law that you must list all driving jobs you have held in the past ten years.
