Don't worry, bud.
I'd say almost half the drivers out
there nowadays are ex-cons.
My trainer was an ex-con.
My first team captain was an ex-con.
Even a couple of dispatchers I know
were ex-cons.
It seems to be a more than common
denominator in the industry today.
Nevermind all the rhetoric you hear
from companies about cleaning up
their act.
It's just a lot of hot air.

In fact, many companies actually prefer
a driver who is on parole or probation.
They know they have a driver who is
under their thumb.
Should said driver give his dispatcher
any guff, one phone call to his parole
officer can land him right back in
the slammer overnight.
I've actually seen this happen.
Don't worry, bud.
Your future looks bright in this industry.

Default ex-con driver

Prime rib, that was a pretty harsh diatribe, but the pertinent question is, which companies will hire an ex-con(I know a couple of guys that want to know for their own employment chances)

Default Diatribe?

Now that's a word you don't hear everyday in this freakin' business...although you hear enough of it in this business!

Default ...

You may find motor carriers less willing to hire convicted felons in the future.

There is a new law out requiring a criminal background check on anyone applying for or renewing a CDL with a Hazmat endorsement.

Anyone with a felony conviction within the past 7 years will not be granted an endorsement.

Note that I said this is not pending legislation it is already law.

Many motor carriers require a Hazmat endorsement even tho they seldom haul such. Remember some consumer products taken for granted such as hairspray, charcoal lighter fluid, roofing cement, etc..etc..are considered hazardous & require that endorsement.

For a detailed explanation of this new law see my post titled "Breaking News".

Hey, whadda 'ya want?
I call 'em as I see 'em.
I actually did know a an ex-con
who was on parole in the outfit
I used to run for.
He didn't get along with dispatch
though I personally thought he
was a stand up guy.
He worked hard and did his best though
he had a personality conflict with the
head hancho in dispatch.

One day things came to a boil and he
picked up a chair and threw it at
said dispatcher's head.
The dispatcher called the cops after
which they picked him up at his apt.
and back to the slammer he went.

In any event, I've seen a lot of cons
come & go in this industry.
Whether they make it or not is up to them.
Some outfits won't even look at you,
however, many are less selective.
In this era of 150% driver turnover
most outfits can't be to picky.
If they were they would have a lot
of empty trucks sitting along
the fence.

I'm curious to know what you did to
land you in stir anyhow?
How long were you locked up?
Are you currently on parole/probation?
And what exactly is it about the
trucking & transportation industry
that appeals to you after the fact?

Default felony hiring

Thank's to all for a reply. Here is more info. The felony is for larceny. I had an 8 month sentence and was on probation. I decided to do the 8 months instead of a 2 year probation. I got out in July of 02. I start driving school in June03 paid for by the state of n.carolina. I just want to get it all behind me and enter the trucking field. I'm hoping a company picks me up. Do you know of any. Thanks
