A standard table of miles from point [a] to point [b]in the trucking industry for years. Since all freight rates are calculated using the miles from pickup point to delivery point as at least part of the input data, a standardized mileage listing was needed. Thus, HHG.

Generally speaking the miles listed would turn out to be less than the actual miles that would be driven between the applicable points. This discrepancy, generally speaking, was especially noticable in the Eastern states. The reason[s] for the differences varied .. some being inherent in the methodology used by the publishers of the HHG, some due to driver preferences as to what route to use and so on.
