Default What are the rates these days???

12 months ago I was getting at least $1.85 cpm out of Chicago. The last run I did out of there paid to the truck, .76 cpm. Thats when I turned in my truck and went back to construction work.

I was just wondering if things are getting any better yet? Our Pres. says its getting better so I thought I would ask people who REALLY know.......

YeaH, I've heard the Prez say that a couple of times now, but when I check my Effect-0-Meter samplings, which is indicating a noticeable and severe decline in the number of Big trucks rollin' through my town. Especially the container haulers comin' and goin' to the rail yards and harbor areas, I'm inclined to think thangs still look bleak.

Not to mention that the unemployment rate continues to rise here in SoCal. So, unless folks are bein' laid off because their company went completely automated, and humans are no longer necessary to produce, ....... which ain't good either ....... I'm thinkin' the Prez is incorrect, at best.

How's it goin' in construction?

First things first; I'm always glad to hear that anyone managed to escape from the exciting world of OTR trucking. Congrats, Dave.

But I'm with 777 and wonder where that $1.85 load was going. A buck eighty five certainly isn't typical of generic loads going any distance. Where were those loads going?

Are you following the news and trade publications? Employment trails the economy and is the last thing to perk up when the economy rebounds. More recent recoveries have been fairly jobless and until employment picks up, consumption of the stuff drivers haul isn't going to pick up much either. Recoveries are measured in (among other things) very slight improvements in GDP. Part of any president's job is "jawboning" the economic improvement.

Since rates are driven by the amount of goods shipped and the availability of trucks to haul it, I'm wondering why:

- You'd think drivers would even notice a very slight increase in seasonally adjusted freight???

- That one driver's experience would reflect the overall state of trucking? Example: if my company hauls a lot of paper to print unemployment checks, I'm probably getting plenty of miles. If we haul car parts, I'm probably not doing that hot.

You are paying way too much attention, Art.

What else can he say? Do we really want or need a pessimist for a President? Ask Jimmy Carter. Do we want exuberant optimism from a President? Herbert Hoover would probably say no – the voters did. “Cautious optimism” is Obama's only choice.

We shouldn't forget that one of the primary reasons Obama was elected was because he kept cool while opponents were sweating bullets. John McCain's ultimate undoing was not his stellar V.P. choice, his age, his temper, or his stubbornly stupid refusal to separate himself from Bush. His implosion happened when he did this- “The economy is fundamentally sound! No, wait...! I'm suspending my campaign and returning to Washington to fix the economic disaster.” At that point he was done - fork tender.

Obama's biggest political problem is the (lack of) jobs situation, which as icantina said, always lags recovery. Nevertheless, if that doesn't improve, he'll very likely be joining Carter and Hoover.
