TWIC (transportation workers, identification credientials) is brought to us by the same folks who brought us The Patriot Act, both original and extended flavors.

Mainly the TWIC card is a form of federal identification for transportation workers. In our case, truck divers. It is used for being allowed access to international shipping ports. Such as Jacksonville, Fl, Houston Tx. These are but a few ports where trucks enter daily in order to ship imported goods and raw materials.

The bureaucratic side of this rule, is if you have a HME (hazard materials endorsement) you have gone through the exact same vetting process that is required by TSA (Transportation Security Administration) and Homeland Security, and FBI. In the state of Missouri the HME criminal background check costs $86.35. If you already have your HME you will spend an extra $105.00 for the nifty card.

Otherwise if you do not have a HME you will spend around $154.00.

I just applied for my TWIC today and it cost me $129.75. They say it takes 1-3 weeks to get the card. If I get my HZ Mat endorsement I can get a small discount on that. If you already have a HZMAT endorsement you can get a small discount on the TWIC.

Hope this helps.
