Default truck driving mentor

Hello, I am wanting to get my class A CDL and need a mentor. I live in The Augusta/Aiken area. I currently have my class B licence and have driven for the school district 12 years. I have an car accident on my driving record from aug of 2011 so I need a mentor to get my license. My phone is 803 384 0229. Thank You. Susan

You don't need a "mentor," Susan, you need a driving school if you want to land a job as an OTR driver. Reasons:

- Not everyone with a CDL is an instructor. For example, even some experienced drivers still don't understand the proper use of the Jake brake after years on the road.

- Even if you could find a qualified driver/trainer, that person gains nothing for the time/effort unless you pay them. The driver who takes on the road will expect something in return for his time and you can guess what that will be??? You could waste months (years?) as a bunk bunny and learn little or nothing.

- There is more to trucking than just moving the truck and you'll be expected to pass the DMV test. The average driver can't get you to that point; it takes a organized program of instruction.

- Trucking companies are going to expect you to have completed a real driving school before they hire you into their training program.

What you propose worked in the 'good ol' days' and in some states the standards were so low that anyone could spend a little time with another driver and get a license. Times change.

We wish you luck.

Hey Juno, thanks for posting this info. You have cleared a lot of questions I had to become an OTR driver. I was initially thinking of joining driving school but thought mentor would be a cheap option. I guess you're correct that times change. Time to go to school
