A flat bed trailer is a long, open trailer that is used for building materials, steel products, large machinery or other oversized items. Loading and unloading a flat bed trailer is physically rigorous and can involve crawling over the trailer to secure the freight with straps and chains, and cover the freight with tarps. Freight is usually handled outside with no protection from rain, snow or sun. During transit, load securement has to be checked frequently and the driver must make necessary adjustments. Many flat bed trucking companies prefer to hire owner-operators and team drivers for these driving positions.
