THOMASVILLE, North Carolina –The 78-year history of Old Dominion Freight Line, Inc., the nation’s premier LTL transportation and logistics provider, is chronicled in a new book, “Helping the World Keep Promises.”
With a foreword by Steve Forbes, chairman of Forbes Media, author Jeff Rodengen shares the inspirational story of Earl and Lillian Congdon, Old Dominion’s founders, who in 1934 pooled their life savings to start the company.
The book is filled with stories and personal anecdotes from long-standing employees, executives and customers.
What began as a company with a single truck hauling eggs between Richmond and Norfolk, Virginia, is today a global publicly traded company with more than 14,000 employees that does $2 billion in annual revenue and has 220 domestic service centers and global operations delivering goods to more than 48,000 locations.
“Our company has prospered for more than 78 years and has grown into the nation’s premier LTL transportation provider,” said David Congdon, president and CEO of Old Dominion and the grandson of Earl and Lillian Congdon. “Our growth was certainly not easy, and it would have not been possible without the dedication and hard work of the entire Old Dominion family throughout the years.”
Old Dominion’s sustained success has led to a history of winning awards. This year, the company has received honors from Forbes magazine, Mastio & Company and other associations and publications.
In March, Old Dominion was honored by Mastio & Company as the No. 1 National LTL carrier in their 2011 Value and Loyalty Benchmarking Study.
The company was also named one of America’s 100 Most Trustworthy Companies by Forbes magazine out of more than 8,000 companies surveyed. The annual recognition is awarded to publicly traded corporations that have consistently demonstrated transparent, conservative accounting practices and solid corporate governance and management.
