NEW YORK-April 10, 2008-SIRIUS Satellite Radio (NASDAQ: SIRI) today announced a special broadcast event featuring veteran TV newsman Tom Brokaw and legendary radio deejay "Cousin Brucie" Morrow sharing their unforgettable memories and the music that transformed a generation in the 1960s. Brokaw will discuss the many cultural changes and social challenges of the time and Morrow will reflect on the musical influences that helped shape attitudes of young people.
"There was so much going on in the ‘60s, and Tom personally witnessed the changes that were taking place," Cousin Brucie said. "His observations are invaluable and his reporting historic."
The discussion can be heard on ‘60s Vibrations channel 6 on Sunday, April 13th, starting at 9 pm ET, with encore broadcasts on Tuesday, April 15th at 10 pm and Saturday, April 19th at 9 am (all times Eastern).
"The Boomers were a big piece of what happened in the ‘60s," Brokaw said about the title of his book, BOOM! Voices of the Sixties. "It also has a kind of explosive connotation because it was ‘boom!' everything changed over night-it seemed-including the music."
Tom Brokaw, one of the most trusted and respected figures in broadcast journalism, stepped down in 2004 after 21 years as the anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News. As a special correspondent, Brokaw continues to report and produce long-form documentaries and provide his expertise during election coverage and breaking news events. In his fifth best-selling book, BOOM! Voices of the Sixties (Random House), Brokaw shares a series of remembrances and reflections of the ‘60s based on his experiences in addition to over 50 interviews with a wide variety of well known artists, politicians, activists, business leaders, and journalists.
Cousin Brucie will be honored by the Broadcasters Foundation of America at the NAB convention with the Pioneer Award on April 16th. Brooklyn-born Bruce Morrow joined SIRIUS following the June 3, 2005 demise of the local oldies station in New York, where he had been one of the city's most popular on-air hosts since 1984. Brucie has been a mainstay of hit radio for over 40 years, and in August 1965 he had the honor of introducing the Beatles at their historic Shea Stadium concert. He also is well known for his role as the magician in the 1987 film Dirty Dancing, for which he was also the music consultant. Cousin Brucie has also been inducted into the Broadcast and Cable Hall of Fame, Radio Hall of Fame, NAB Hall of Fame, NY State Broadcasters Hall of Fame and has an exhibit in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
