Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)
EPA 2010 has many drivers worried and confused. As the world moves towards "Going Green," it is slowly but surely creeping more and more into the trucking industry. Once upon a time, a driver would get a thrill out of looking at the smoke billowing out the smokestacks through the mirror as he went through the gears! Well, those days are coming to an end.
Let's take a look at Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). SCR is a diesel emissions control technology that offers diesel fuel economy and operational advantages while, at the same time, optimizing engine efficiency and reducing pollutants recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to near-zero levels.
Believe it or not, in 2008, Audi, BMW, Hyundai, Jeep, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Mini and Volkwagen all adopted SCR technology as did light truck manufacturers serving the U.S.
Selective Catalytic Reduction is as good for business as it is for the environment with it's a beneficial return in both economic and environmental sectors. Today, there are over 600,000 SCR trucks running cleaner worldwide. OEM's are constantly performing extreme testing to ensure optimized performance on 2010 SCR-equipped vehicles.
SCR has already been proven to be economical with a fuel economy savings of up to 5%. As a matter of fact, an SCR-equipped vehicle can save as much as much as 600 gallons of diesel fuel in a year. That, in itself, equates to big savings to companies, small fleet owners, and owner-operators!
You've probably heard of Diesel Exhaust Fluids and have had concerns. SCR-equipped engines require the use of Diesel Exhaust Fluid which is the emissions reduction agent used in SCR technology. Some drivers may have concerns and wonder if this fluid is safe. Diesel Exhaust Fluid is safe and will be available at truck stops and retailers throughout the U.S. and Canada, so finding the fluid should be as simple as finding antifreeze or motor oil.
Overall, don't let the 2010 requirements scare or worry you. Just remember that SCR is proven, economical, and convenient. Changes come our way from time to time and we must be able to adjust and roll with the changes and, just like anything else, once we're completely into this new technology, it will become a part of your daily life.
